Labour intensive construction (Periods 1995 to 2000 and 2000 to 2003) |
Various LIC options for the construction of bases were evaluated: Clinker ash. Waterbound macadam. Composite macadam. Emulsion treated gravel. Emulsion treated clinker ash. Conventionally constructed crushed stone base control section. Testing included construction monitoring HVS testing and comprehensive laboratory testing. |
Evaluate outstanding process in terms of ease of construction and quality control. Test bearing capacity of various options relative to each other. Cost/benefit evaluation. HVS tests 394A4 to 408A4. |
None of the LIC options performed as well as CSB control section. Highest bearing capacity: ETB gravel and high density waterbound macadam. Intermediate bearing capacity: Below density specification waterbound macadam and composite macadam. Low bearing capacity: Clinker ash and emulsion treated clinker ash. Cost/benefit results calibrated for effect of density. Mechanistic - empirical guideline document for waterbound macadam material. |
